What is this all about, anyway?

September Third is meant to serve as a conduit to showcase amusing and illuminating finds from the universe-at-large. Mostly design-centric, S3 runs the gamut from food to travel to entertainment to architecture and whatever else bubbles up.

A little about me…

If you want the professional bit, read it here.

I am basically just a guy who loves design and felt the need to express myself further than the capabilities that my previous sites could offer. I’m not an accomplished writer by any stretch of the imagination, though I have written three feature film scripts (the first when I was 16), four reality television pitches and a bunch of other er, gibberish.

I am the father of this guy, am married to a lovely lass and am stepfather to her son. I am inspired by beautiful design, which, shockingly enough, can be readily found offline in everyday things. I am also inspired by great music and even enough at times to get me back to the keyboards to work on my *ahem* album (which I will finish someday).

Anyway, I’ll take a cue from a friend and do the “post 100 things about yourself” meme.

1. Grew up in LA. and live in Virginia, but yearn to live in NYC.
2. I have been to Tokyo twice, London three times and some other places.
3. I can cross my middle and fore-fingers.
4. I drink a case of Smartwater every week. It’s not working.
5. I live in a van down by the river.
6. I have survived over 10 rounds of layoffs at different companies.
7. Devout foodie. I will go to the ends of the earth for a good meal.
8. On that note, Anthony Bourdain is a saint is devil’s clothing.
9. I have little self-control, but I managed to do the Lemonade Diet.
10. Where’s Waldo?
11. Sammy Davis Jr’s “The Candy Man” makes me happy inside.
12. I am the youngest of six. I was born the first year of Gen X and the last year of the baby boomers. I can’t even think of a word to describe that.
13. I don’t speak Klingon, sorry.
14. To help overcome shyness, I danced with ALL the girls at the camp dance when I was 12 years old. It didn’t work, but it was interesting.
15. Web 2.0 design is unsinpired and suffers from mass “stuplication” (don’t look it up).
16. That said, I’m a fan of Virb, Vox, Blurb, Flickr and Picnik.
17. I also think Facebook rocks. I know, I know.
18. I am a Mac dork. As a kid, I “designed” video games in the 70’s on an Apple II in one of the country’s first computer stores. The owners loved us. They would tell customers “even those kids can use it.” I just wish I had bought some Apple stock.
19. Once had dinner in our neighborhood local restaurant near CalTech with my mom. Stephen Hawking was there. I looked at my mom and said, “hey mom…look…. (gesturing to Stephen)….the smartest and dumbest man in the world at the same place at the same time.” Er, you had to be there.
20. Boxers
21. My sister mentored me in graphic design. I was especially fond of identity design (aka “logo design”), designing hundreds of brands by the age of ten.
22. As a child, I was a frequent visitor to the set of the Sonny and Cher Show and often wandered around studios and backlots, exploring sets and soundstages.
23. Later, on a cue from Stephen Spielberg, I got a job as a security guard at Universal Studios, where I worked on shows like “Airwolf,” “Murder, She Wrote” and films like “The Goonies” and “Back to the Future (see my personal set pics here).” And yes, I even got to meet Mr. Spielberg himself.
24. Is this thing on?
25. OK, I can’t go on. Sue me.
